TIME selects the best fashion photographers to follow on Instagram ahead of New York Fashion Week
The Fashion Week runway has long been confined to the elite in the world’s major fashion capitals—Paris, Milan, New York and London—and to the pages of international publications like Vogue and Vanity Fair. But with the ubiquity of smartphones, the show’s previously vetted behind-the-scenes moments have recently exploded across thousands of Instagram accounts.
Ahead of New York’s Fashion Week, which begins on Sept. 10, TIME profiles five photographers you should follow on Instagram, as well as the app’s own head of fashion partnerships.
Ukrainian-born, New York City-based Dina Litovsky (@dina_litovsky) is interested in capturing interactions between people. Her series, titledFashion Lust, captures over four seasons of Fashion Week with the camera turned on the crowds and sometimes behind the curtains. Her aim is to “investigate the scene where the expertly constructed image of guests rivals the air-brushed glamour of the actual show,” she writes on her website. “With photographers often outnumbering models backstage and front-row guests, the appetite to see and be seen is seemingly extended to everyone finding themselves in the closed, hectic space of blinding flashes and surveillance-style Instagramming.” Her feed, which offers a look into New York culture in general, shows the lesser seen scenes of what she calls the “madness of Fashion Week.”
Hailing from the streets of Harlem, Joshua Woods’ (@joshuawoods) has been photographing Fashion Week across the world for the past three years. From clean-cut models in Dior’s newest line of vintage-style suits to edgy metropolitans in new age ensembles, Woods’ feed has become one of the hottest sources of men’s fashion during Fashion Week.
Bill Cunningham is the undisputed legend of fashion street photography, whose evergreen Sunday column On the Street at the New York Times doesn’t cease to educate and enhance readers of all age on the latest, finest fashion street trends. While the celebrated photographer is devoted to film, his assistant John Kurdewan runs for him a brilliant Instagram account (@workforbillc) that presents an unprecedented behind the scene look at Cunningham’s creative work. We peek at insightful moments of Cunningham carefully reviewing On the Street‘s latest edit, for example. In the end, Kurdewan’s @workforbillc offers a glimpse into the life of an outstanding and resilient professional whose insightful shots never cease to inspire the fashion amateurs and glamorous globetrotters.
Margaret Zhang is a stylist, writer, photographer, blogger, and creative consultant based in Sydney, Australia, who just graduated with a degree in law from the University of Sydney. Her fashion digital debut dates back to 2009, and since then she has collaborated with several fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Clinique, Swarovski and UNIQLO. Zhang’s styling and creative work has been featured by several publications such as L’Officiel, Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire. Zhang’s Instagram feed chronicled her work as a trendsetter and model alike, ranging from magazine shootings, dreamy travel glimpses and still life’s snaps where she carefully magnifies beauty goods and food delights as decadent paintings.
There’s no doubt that fashion represents a golden opportunity for Instagram to reach new audiences, and that’s why the company hired Eva Chen to run its fashion partnerships. A former editor-in-chief of US magazine Lucky and Teen Vogue beauty editor, Chen works closely with stylists, designers and brands to further develop engaging narratives around fashion stories. Being a social platforms’ guru (she announced her pregnancy on Instagram) Chen’s feed sports snaps of her working life, donuts’ indulgence, and trendy outfits she boasts around the city making fashion an inviting and easy game. Her brilliant and iconic #evachenpose gallery invariably features a pair of shoes, a bag or pochette and a healthy snack (typically an apple) framed on a comfy car’s back seat, driving her around New York: an essential digest of the best mix and match for any occasions and seasons.
